Arcata Decriminalizes Shrooms and Peyote

The Arcata City Council has voted unanimously to effectively decriminalize psilocybin mushrooms and other entheogenic plants like peyote and ayahuasca.

The measure was championed by Decriminalize Nature Humboldt. The group received over 300 letters of support from members of the public.

“With decriminalization, Arcata residents will be able to ingest, gift, gather, grow, and share entheogens without fear of arrest,” Danielle Daniel, lead organizer of Decriminalize Nature Humboldt, told Marijuana Moment. “By destigmatizing entheogens, the community will have more openness to conversing about the healing potential of psychoactive plants and fungi.”

The Humboldt County city is the third in California to take this step after Oakland and Santa Cruz. A bill that would have legalized psychedelics statewide was pulled by its author Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) this year. Activists are now collecting signatures for a state ballot initiative.
