San Francisco’s Big 4/20 Celebration Has Been Canceled Again. Here’s How People Can Ring in the Holiday.

For the second year in a row, organizers have been forced to call off the annual 4/20 celebration at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park.

“Although we’re in a better place in our fight against COVID-19 than we were last year, we are still not at the point where we can allow large, crowded events,” San Francisco Mayor London Breed said last week.

“Please do your part to keep our community safe and celebrate from home. Anyone travelling to Golden Gate Park or Hippie Hill looking for a party will be disappointed.”

While the stoner fete on ‘Hippie Hill’ has been quashed, plenty of virtual celebrations are taking its place. Bay Area rapper turned cannabis company CEO Berner will host an online event from San Francisco’s BEI hotel.

There’s also a San Francisco scavenger hunt for adults 21+, where participants are asked to take selfies at historic cannabis locations in San Francisco. Winning teams will get $200 in prizes.

There’s a lot going on in SoCal too. Cypress Hill is performing at the Roxy Theatre for a mixed live/live-streamed event. Ngaio Bealum’s monthly 420 Comedy Extravanganja is taking place on Zoom. The Glendale Sears Parking Lot will host a drive-in showing of the stoner film Pineapple Express. And Herbarium in Los Angeles is hosting a 4/20 event with rapper Ice Cube and the comedic duo Jay & Silent Bob (Kevin Smith and Jay Mewes) from 8 AM to 10 PM.

The momentum for cannabis liberalization drums along, but it doesn’t come cheap. In addition to grassroots efforts, millions in lobbying dollars have been spent to affect policy change.
