Contra Costa Hemp Moratorium Extended, Regulations Expected by March
Contra Costa County staff will work quickly to ensure new hemp regulations are developed by March 10. The Board of Supervisors voted last month to extend a moratorium on hemp growing and directed staff to come up with legislation by spring.
Initially, there were plans to extend the moratorium into October 2021. Local hemp growers said that would kill their business. Supervisor Diane Burgis, who represents the district where the five approved hemp growing operations are located, wanted regulations crafted by February.
Hemp growing has sparked a few different controversies in Contra Costa. First, it is difficult to distinguish the plant from marijuana, which makes it an excellent “cover” for illicit pot operations. Secondly, some residents have complained about odor.
