Humboldt County Extends Hemp Moratorium

Humboldt County supervisors have extended a moratorium on industrial hemp cultivation. The pause will last until May 10, 2021.

According to the Times-Standard, the moratorium was prompted by calls from small farmers, “who ‘felt alienated from the cannabis permitting process’ and wanted to cultivate medicinal hemp. At the direction of supervisors, staff shifted focus to work on the Small Farmer Amendment to the Commercial Cannabis Land Use Ordinance.”

There has also been general opposition to industrial hemp in Humboldt County, as cannabis growers have long been worried about cross-pollination. Those concerns were articulated by Humboldt County Growers Alliance policy director Ross Gordon.

Discussions about those concerns and the future of small farmers will continue over the next four-and-a-half months.
