FDA Seeks Company to Test CBD Products
The Food and Drug Administration is looking to hire a company to test CBD products as the agency looks to regulate the product.
The chosen company will be responsible for “collecting samples and assessing the quantities of CBD and related cannabinoids, as well as potential associated contaminants such as toxic elements, pesticides, industrial chemicals, processing solvents and microbial contaminants, in foods and cosmetics through surveys of these commodities,” the FDA said.
The assessments will be used to help the FDA develop policies on CBD going forward.
Despite great interest and popularity of CBD products, there are currently no FDA-approved foods containing cannabidiol. That could eventually change. The FDA approved the first CBD-derived pharmaceutical, Epidiolex, in 2018. Last year, the agency began holding hearings on potential CBD regulation for the first time.
