What’s the Proper Age Limit for Marijuana?

Under California law, you must be 21 years old to purchase marijuana. But new research says the minimum age is likely an overshoot and individuals may be able to safely use cannabis products by age 19.

The study was published this month in BMC Public Health. The researchers analyzed survey data from around 20,000 respondents. While teen marijuana use results in “significantly worse outcomes,” the researchers found that life outcomes for users differed little between ages 19 and 21.

Is it time for us to lower the age limit? Not so fast, say researchers. Although the difference in life outcomes was minimal, the study did not examine impacts on cognitive function. Further research is needed to assess cognitive impacts from marijuana use between the ages of 19 and 21.
