California Declares Cannabis ‘Essential’ Service During Lockdown

On Thursday, Governor Gavin Newsom announced a statewide shelter-in-place order to slow the spread of the coronavirus. The order forced the shut-down of non-essential businesses like retail stores, gyms, hair and nail salons and playgrounds.

One industry that will continue to operate during lockdown is the cannabis industry. In a follow-up document, the Governor’s office deemed cannabis an “essential” business along with pharmacies, health care providers, public safety departments and grocery stores. The order makes no distinction between medicinal and recreational cannabis.

A separate document from the Bureau of Cannabis Control notes that cannabis businesses must comply with CDC guidelines such as encouraging regular hand-washing by employees, additional cleaning measures in the workplace, and prohibiting sick employees from coming into work.
