Study Shows More Older Americans Are Using Pot

A new study shows more senior citizens are turning to cannabis to ease aches and pains, relax, and sleep.

The research was published Monday in JAMA. It shows a significant increase in the number of cannabis users aged 65 or older.

In 2006, just 0.4% of seniors used marijuana. That number ticked up to 2.4% in 2015 and 4.2% in 2018. Many users are in good health.

There were some concerning aspects of the study. The researchers found that seniors are increasingly combining cannabis and alcohol, for instance. Some research suggests that cannabis use can also be harmful to people who have recently had heart attacks, so experts want any users with cardiac issues be aware of potential risk.
