Santa Barbara Planners Mull Ways to Address Cannabis Controversy

Odor control and other problems arising from the proliferation of commercial cannabis continue to dominate much of the Santa Barbara County Planning Commission’s agenda. The body will continue discussions on Feb. 26 and again on March 4.

Last year, supervisors directed the commission to come up with options to solve the issues surrounding cannabis. There have been increased tensions between growers and residents, as well as cities. In addition to odors, liability for use of pesticides by traditional farmers and winemakers has also been a problem.

District Commissioner John Parke has offered one suggestion: a cannabis overlay that would incentivize growers to operate in less contentious areas. It would require an amendment to the General Plan.
