Fresno Approves Cannabis Ordinance

Fresno city leaders have approved a new ordinance allowing retail marijuana dispensaries to operate within city limits. Thursday’s vote was 4-3. It could still face a veto from Mayor Lee Brand.

Under the ordinance, 14 pot shops would be permitted to open their doors. Today, there are more than 100 illicit dispensaries operating in Fresno.

The ordinance also has a social justice provision to benefit those communities that have been hit hardest by the War on Drugs.

“We wanted to make sure we included veterans those who are under employed and those who receive public assistance and former foster care folks to make sure that this industry leads the effort of employing as many people that other industries have left behind," said Councilman Miguel Arias.
