New Law Makes It Easier for Cannabis Workers to Unionize

Cannabis Businesses with 20 or more employees must enter into labor agreements within 60 days under a new law signed by Gov Gavin Newsom.

AB 1291 strengthens existing law that requires cannabis shops to sign labor peace deals. Until now, there was no deadline on compliance, giving the rule no teeth.

Assemblyman Reggie Jones-Sawyer, who sponsored the bill, says it will “provide employees with clarity on when an employer is failing to comply with the laws and a complaint needs to be filed” (Cannabis Wire).

California now joins one other state, New York, in requiring permitted dispensaries to forge formal agreements promising not to prevents workers from unionizing.
