URBN Leaf Eyes Rancho Bernardo for Next Project

A cannabis company says it plans to set up shop in the Rancho Bernardo area of San Diego, which would make it the first dispensary in this part of town. URBN Leaf, which owns two other storefronts in San Diego County, has filed a conditional use permit with the city.

San Diego’s marijuana ordinance allows four dispensaries per City Council district. URBN Leaf would be located in District 5 at a strip mall on Bernardo Center Drive.

"We're excited about the opportunity, we think the community does need it," the company’s president Will Senn told KGTV.

Not so fast, opponents say. They claim the shop would be too close (within 1,000 feet) of a local church plus two other “minor-oriented facilities” in the strip mall. If so, that’s violation of city law.

"We're 1,000 feet away from the church," countered Senn. "And there is some language in other projects that have been approved by the planning commission that is consistent with our project."

If Senn’s project is ultimately approved, it would be the 24th in San Diego and the first in District 5.

Likening the proliferation of illicit marijuana cultivation to a “raging forest fire,” Siskiyou County Sheriff Jon Lopey is once again urging the governor to declare a state of emergency.
