1,300 Bales of Pot Discovered in Waters Off Catalina Island

Authorities made a surprising discovery off the Coast of Catalina Island last week.

Coast Guard personnel from the Los Angeles-Long Beach station and L.A. County lifeguards arrived on scene Tuesday after someone spotted bales of possible narcotics floating in the ocean. It turned out to be 1,300 pounds of marijuana.

It’s not clear who the weed belongs to or how it got there. Federal authorities are now conducting an investigation, according to City News Service.

“We appreciate the assistance provided by our partners and vigilant mariners in keeping these drugs off of our streets," said Lt. Andrew L. Fox, commanding officer of Coast Guard Station.

“We encourage anyone who sees suspicious activity on the water, signs of distress or hazards to navigation to contact Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles Long Beach personnel on VHF channel 16 or at 310-521-3801."
