Protesters Decry Proposed Cannabis Facility in El Monte

El Monte’s City Council is set to decide on a proposed marijuana processing and distribution center in the 4400 block of Temple City Boulevard next week. The facility has already received a thumbs up from the city’s planning commission. But on Dec. 8, a swarm of angry residents made clear they don’t agree.

“No marijuana center. Keep our children safe!” shouted protestors as they marched down the streets of El Monte. The facility — which would grow, test, and sell cannabis — will bring crime and blight into the community, they fear.

Officials tried their best to push back on those concerns, noting that the facility must have a robust and comprehensive security plan in place. A vocal faction of the city remains unpersuaded.

The Council’s vote will be held on Dec. 18.
