Fresno OKs Medicinal Pot

Medical marijuana sales have been approved by the Fresno City Council, with recreational marijuana to follow in one year.

Thursday’s City Council vote represents a major victory for the cannabis industry and legalization advocates in California’s Central Valley. Under the ordinance, each of the 7 districts will be allotted one cannabis retailer. Barring any problems, that figure will eventually increase to two per district.

The vote was 5-2, with Councilmembers Garry Bredefeld and Steve Brandau dissenting. (Bredefeld tried unsuccessfully to amend the ordinance by exempting districts where a majority of voters opposed Prop. 64.) The “yes” votes are enough to overcome a mayoral veto.
