New Pilot Program Will Allow Outdoor Grows in Monterey

For decades, medical marijuana cultivators in Monterey County grew their plants outdoors. The natural sunlight made their product superior to indoor-cultivated weed, they said.

That all changed when the county legalized commercial cannabis and restricted all cultivation to existing greenhouses. Today, Monterey County prohibits cultivation outdoors.

Thanks in part to a spirited public relations and lobbying campaign, that could soon change. County supervisors recently voted 3-2 in favor of a pilot program allowing for outdoor cannabis grows beginning in 2019.

The excitement on the part of cultivators is palpable. Growers hope the county will eventually expand the pilot program.
