“Weed the Homeless” Donates Pot to People Living on California’s Streets

Free weed for the homeless? Believe it or not, this philanthropic endeavor is a current reality on Southern California streets.

The group “Weed the Homeless” was started in 2017 by self-described “international epileptic stoner” and cannabis activist Jackie Sponseller. She's now gotten cannabis companies to join her in donating free cannabis to the homeless in Los Angeles and San Diego for a fourth time.

Sponseller says the program can help homeless people treat medical conditions and discourage them from using dangerous drugs.

"If you look at places where they have legalized recreational cannabis, the levels of people overdosing from hard drugs and usage have gone down substantially,” Sponseller said.

In addition to the marijuana, her group donates clothes, food and other items to those in need.
