Poll: Majority of Americans -- and Republicans -- Support Legalization of Marijuana

The era of reefer madness is long gone. Americans are more open to marijuana today than ever before, according to a new Gallup poll. And that includes members of the GOP too -- much to the chagrin of U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, we assume.

The poll found 64 percent support for legalization of pot. That’s an all-time record high. Among Republicans, the figure was smaller but still a majority for the first time: 51 percent.

Gallup’s latest research is further proof that the federal government remains out of step with the American public on this issue. If past trends are any indication, that 64 percent figure will only continue to rise. In 1969, just 12 percent of people supported marijuana legalization.
