Jean Quan’s Pot Shop Moves Full Steam Ahead

Former Oakland Mayor Jean Quan’s new pot shop received a thumbs up Thursday from the San Francisco Planning Commission. After months of pushback from community and anti-marijuana groups, Quan’s new Apothecarium Dispensary was approved by a 5 to 1 vote. The chambers were jam-packed with more than 700 speakers, many of them furious about the news.

This is a medical dispensary, and the only one in the neighborhood. It will focus on catering to the area’s Chinese-American community, employing only Cantonese-speaking staff. Quan said it’s really her husband’s baby, but her involvement is logistic.

“…my Chinese is better than his," according to Quan.

Asked whether the Apothecarium will slide into recreational sales after January 1, 2018, commission director John Rahaim said it’s unknown, but that “it would be very unlikely that it would just be automatic.”
