Former L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Supports Pot Legalization Measure
The Proposition 64 campaign landed another major endorsement last week, with former Los Angeles mayor and likely 2018 gubernatorial candidate Antonio Villaraigosa saying he supports the state’s recreational marijuana legalization measure.
“I took my time on this measure because I wanted to make sure it included protections for children and public safety,” Villaraigosa said in a statement. “In evaluating the measure in its entirety, I am convinced there are enough safeguards to make it a workable proposition.”
Villaraigosa joins a growing list of high-ranking politicians in California supporting the initiative, including Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and Sacramento Mayor-Elect Darrell Steinberg. Villaraigosa’s endorsement could prove particularly influential among Latinos, who are said to be critical to the outcome of Tuesday’s vote.
